Keira Knightly Continues Quest For Oscar With The Duchess - Poster and Trailer

Keira Knightly must really, really love period dramas…or big frilly dresses…or wigs because she’s starting to get quite the reputation as the queen (or Duchess as the case may be) for these period romance/drama films. I’m not saying it’s an awful choice - better than some of her others - but where does it end?

In The Duchess, Knightly plays Georgiana Spencer who was a vibrant beauty and a celebrity of her time if we believe the hype. Unfortunately, she was trapped in an unhappy triangle with her husband and his live-in mistress. Well, as luck would have it, she falls passionately in love with an ambitious young politician, and the affair causes a bitter conflict with her husband and threatens to erupt into a scandal. How did I know?

I think the film itself looks absolutely beautiful as all good Oscar bait movies should. The costumes and art design and everything seem to be in perfect order. I’m a little confused about the release date since these kind of movies are usually released later in the year, but I guess they have a plan.

The Duchess stars Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Charlotte Rampling, Dominic Cooper and Hayley Atwell. It’s set to hit theaters on August 29, 2008.
