Mike’s Pull List for the week of July 30th

New comic books come out every Wednesday and lately that coincides with the same day I make my weekly appearance at the local comic book store.

Some of you have heard me lament about my lost childhood and the fact that comic books were never a part of it. I’d always talked about how I should pick up a graphic novel someday, but I really had no clue what that meant.

Thanks to my wife buying me Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns for Valentine’s Day this year, my comic book infatuation was launched into the stratosphere.

And honestly, how amazing is a present like that? Jina is the best wife EVER. She probably had no clue what kind of monster she was going to create when I opened those two gifts. The picture to the right is most of my collection so far, even though The Cap’n has my copy of Watchmen at the moment.

I even bought my first storage box today and a bunch of bags/boards because comics have been piling up all over the house. I gathered them up from the bedroom, the kitchen table and some random bookcases, and spread them out on the bed to see what I had before I organize and stash away.

All that above was just an introduction to the purpose of this post. Everyone knows I love to talk about myself and the things I like, which is half the reason Pop Critics is in existence, so I’m going to start a weekly(ish) series about my comic books purchases.

I have a pull list set up at Atomic Comics and I seem to add to it every time I visit, instead of taking anything away. I don’t even remember what’s on it, but here is what I think I have:

Batman RIP (which includes Robin, Detective, Nightwing and something else), Superman, Nova, all BSG comics, Batman/Superman, War Heroes, 1985, Solomon Kane, Kick-Ass, The Dark Towers and I can’t think of what else.

The other aspect of this blog series will be the chance for you guys to have me review one or more of these in greater detail later in the week. So if you see a title that looks cool and want to know more about it, just comment below and tell me you want a review!

This week my box didn’t contain much, but of course I found other items that I just had to have.

Superman/Batman #50 - The Big 50th Issue!

This is actually the first one of this series that I’ve gotten and I’m curious whether this 50th issue hoopla is a big deal or not in terms of a collector’s item someday. Either way, I absolutely love the combination of these two in a comic book and cannot wait to read it.

Battlestar Galactica: Season Zero, #11

I received my first BSG comic last week and it was the final issue of the Adama arc in the Origins series. Of course, I went ahead and grabbed the first three issues as well, so I could get the whole story.

Well, with issue #11, I’m obviously behind. I can likely jump right in and be okay, but that didn’t stop me from finding back issues of #7-10 and buying them as well. Season Zero is a prequel to the events in the TV show.

I think it’s only going to run 12 issues, but I could be wrong.

Joker’s Asylum: Two-Face

This Joker’s Asylum series was a special month-long, weekly one-shot deal that features stories of some of Batman’s most evil villains…all hosted by The Joker.

Sort of like that scary little mummy dude from Tales from the Crypt.

No clue if it will be any good, but I’m on a serious Batman high right now.

Voltron: A Legend Forged #1

I picked this up at Comic-Con this past weekend, so it wasn’t a pull list item. I always liked Voltron as a kid, mostly because the way the robots all connected fascinated me to no end. So when I saw this at the Devils Due booth, I immediately was drawn to it. Especially this cover to the right by EJ SU. Just loved it.

I spoke to the author for a few minutes, Josh Blaylock (also the President of Devil’s Due Publishing), who also signed the copy for me. I’m looking forward to checking this series out, because any robot that transforms is awesome, I don’t care who you are.

DDP already published a collection of their previous Voltron comics called the Voltron Omnibus, but this one is supposed to be easy to pick up even if you haven’t read any of the other stories. A Legend Forged takes place AFTER the previous comics, but also 1200 years in the past. Sounds very cool.

On a side note, Josh also handed me a free Drafted comic book, which was a sort of compilation of the entire first 6-issues and I’m totally hooked. I am going to try and find the trade somewhere soon.

  1. If you've got time to read all those comics, you've got time to write more articles for Pop Critics! Get to work!

Just kidding, of course. Sounds like a good collection. I buy books like that. Sadly, they take a lot longer to read…

  2. Wow….you are cold-blooded in the mornings.

I write tons of articles already, I read bazillions of comic books AND I go to Comic-Con to provide AWESOME coverage, and yet it's STILL not good enough for you?

    Okay, I'll try harder…

  3. Trust me… we don't need him to write MORE articles! We need him to sit on the couch and watch MORE tv with me. :)

  4. That's what's so great about this “job.” We get to read comics, watch TV, and watch movies and then say we're doing work!

  5. See, now there's the gung ho attitude I like to see in a Pop Critic!

  6. The writing and reading is going to come to a crawl once its Mo's turns to be up at 2:00 a.m. with Jr… ;)

  7. I want that job!

  8. Mike nice collection bud, what can I borrow!! =) Jina how sweet of you to give the gift of Heros!!! Its a monster with a cape, comic books are… enjoy!

  9. Audio books! :)

  10. When the Fall gets here, you know that's right where I'll be :)

  11. Yeah for Christmas you should get the “You Talk it Types” software…. since your hands will be full…

  12. Fall? What about Olympic time and Football time!?!?!

  13. You realize we don't actually get paid for this, right?

  14. Hey, I think we each pulled in around $33.95 last month man, don't you be sneezing at that! :)

  15. Football = Sundays, Olympics are in August…

I'm talking September and October, when all the new shows return :)

  16. What!?!?! Dont tell me that!!! I've got this image of you and mike, getting up from the couh or lounge chair, putting down you sip of tea or lemonade or some other frosty beverage just to type up the next article loaded with witty comments to make us all smile at our crap jobs under the hand of the man. So dont tell me that… we got live vicariously through our image of you guys!!

  17. Awesome, thats a half tank of gas or your co-pay at the doctor after you eat some mexican peppers…

  18. oh well in that case, Jina will have to wait until the fall to have you watch tv with her… and here she got you the above gift…

  19. By the time we subtract hosting and movie rentals, going to the theater, buying comic books, etc…

    I think I lost about $200…

  20. Well, that's pretty much what we do…we just don't get paid for it…and our wives are in the background yelling at us to “do something useful with our day” or “take out the trash” or “make sure the baby isn't drowning in the pool.”

  21. [...] last week I started a little series where I tell you guys the comic books that I get on my pull list, and offer to review any of them if someone asks. Well, none of you asked for [...]
