A new trailer for Frank Miller’s The Spirit was leaked online today and the general consensus has been that it is downright awful. Well, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again now - this movie does nothing for me. Check it out and tell me what you think.
Watching this trailer I just kept thinking that it looked like an ’80s British music video or something. Now, I guess we should keep in mind that the studio has been busy all day getting people to take the trailer down so I guess they either didn’t anticipate the negative response or the trailer really wasn’t supposed to be put out there. The thing is, it’s a completed trailer. I find it hard to believe that it wasn’t supposed to be released either on purpose or “accidentally” on purpose. I think they just don’t like the negative response they’re getting so they’re trying to do some damage control.
I think they probably could do a better video that downplays some of the…well, weirdness of the film, maybe change the music and make it look a lot cooler which would help a lot. But if the movie itself is actually as “different” as the trailer indicates it might be, I think even a good advertising campaign won’t do much but win them a good first weekend then a quick drop off the charts.
But what do you guys think? Is it as bad as I think it is or do you like it? Is it another Sin City or something completely different?

Yuck
I think I'll pass on this one. It looks boring as well as weird.
This could be surprisingly good or completely terrible. I am leaning toward the latter. This does remind me of Absoute Beginners or a musical type movie or the dream sequence from the Big Lebowski.
I think it will………………………………………….suck.
I stopped watching 300 twenty minutes in and never got around to watching Sin City but everyone tells me it's bad. The Spirit looks decent but I'm not sure I'll ever get around to watching it… The music is good though.
I loved 300, and Sin City was pretty cool.
300 and Sin City were both great IMHO. The Spirit looks like it has potential. Definitely dark, violent, and sexual….not a bad combination. Then again it could suck.
Well, I thought Sin City was pretty interesting, but I thought 300 was pretty awful. The historical liberties they took were bad enough to turn me off (not that I expected it to be accurate or anything, but…), but I just didn't feel that the computer generated landscapes worked for the story they were trying to tell. Instead of telling a story in a unique way that added something to it, I felt it just distracted and reminded me of why I enjoy shot-on-location epics so much.
The Spirit looks worse than 300 to me.
Saw this yesterday and almost gagged. If it's indicative of the look of the film, Frank Miller should stick to comics.
I want to like it but I can't. And it's cut like a bad commercial…
i think it looks really different and cool, actually. definitely going to see it. and for all of you that are talking about the movie 300, miller didnt direct that, he just created the graphic novel…soo if you didn't like 300, there's not really much reason to compare that to this…other than choice of story and what not…
Well, I also think some critique 300's historical accuracy (Jason), but it comes from the graphic novel, not the history books.
I loved it…whoever directed it.
When we're comparing 300 to The Spirit we're not really comparing directors, we're comparing the way the films were made. They both used the same film technique to design a sort of virtual world that exists mostly in a computer. Therefore, I feel it's an adequate comparison. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is another good example of the technique (and one which I thought actually worked very well).
Still, I could write a graphic novel about the Alamo where the Mexicans are half man/half monster and all the Texans live, but if I make a movie about it and call it The Alamo people are probably going to expect the Texans to die…a lot of people know the details. If you change a bunch of the details you might as well call it something else. That's my problem with the story.
I already explained why I felt the film technique didn't work for the story they were telling.

To my knowledge, this is the first movie Frank Miller is directing; I think the trailer is as awful as the next user, and I hope Frank Miller hasn't gone willy nilly with self-indulgence.
Perhaps he should just stick to making comics. :/
