Punisher: War Zone Looks Bloody Absurd In New Red Band Trailer

The last time we took at Punisher: War Zone it didn’t look half bad. In fact, it looked much better than I had thought it would look. The trailer had some good action and the poster looks kind of cool. Now we get the red band trailer from Comic-Con and everything goes downhill…

I guess there’s a certain segment of the population that will see the bloody, red band parts of this trailer and think that it’s really cool. I, however, see someone’s fist go into another person’s head and I chuckle at the absurdity. And I have no idea what the spinning blender thing was for other than to chop up bad guys.

Punisher: War Zone hits theaters (assuming you still want to see it) on December 5, 2008.

  1. Hmmm, parts of this looks ok and the overthetop head explosions, fist going through skull etc is terrible, not just because it is excessive but come on how plausible is that. This went from DVD rental to not seeing at all.

  2. I think it looks pretty bad ass. The effects look amateurish though. They hardly showed any storyline, just shooting everywhere and everyone. Eh. And I hate how they have a different actor for the part. I prefer the other guy. Anyone know why they did that? Was the other guy just not bad ass enough? Did he just not want to do it?

I'll probably end up renting it. Although I don't know if I'll be able to watch it by myself. Seems like one of those movies where it's boring without someone to watch it with, and well, to keep you awake.

  3. Thomas Jane (bad punisher-voice aside) was really good as Frank Castle, I thought. I also thought I read somewhere that he wanted to do the second one…so I don't know what happened.

As for “War Zone,” eh. The over-the-top violence and poor effects don't make it seem very appealing, but I'll probably see it in the theater anyway. I wish they'd look at what makes the Punisher a success in the comics (which, BTW, is simple: it's Garth Ennis) and take one of those stories and faithfully adapt it.

They got a lot of stuff right in the first one despite having a lot of stuff wrong (and, sadly, I think Thomas Jane was one of those that knew it and knew the potential of the character). I was hoping they'd build on those things. Seems they haven't.

  4. Okay, here's what I'd read about Jane and the Punisher. I knew I'd heard that he “got” the role, but I'd forgotten that he pulled himself off:

  5. I think the pic up at the top of the article looks like the Hulk… actually a cooler Hulk than the CGI one from this summer's movie.

  6. The rumors you might not have heard say that the studio forced him out. That's the story I believe.

  7. Yeah I'm not sure why Marvel contiunually convinces the mvoies studios (Lionsgate prior to their own franchise) that we all demand to see more punisher. Really? The first one blew chunks with Dolph Lundgren and Marvel even hates it was even made. Pariah is right when he says the second one with Thomas Jane was decent, well ok, the story and 90% of other characaters in it sucked, but Jane stood out and did a great job. Now we have this sillyness, that trailer is horrible…wonder why they give us more Punisher…

I DO want to see more Punisher, but I want to see him done well.

I think he could be a great character on the screen, but it can't be cartoony or over the top violence. As in the comic books (when done well), the violence is more matter-of-fact and expedient. He's not trying to do any fancy moves or impress, he's trying to avenge his family's murders and he's damn good at it. He needs to be more military, less super-heroy/villainy).

    JMHO

  9. You don't think that an actor who loves the comic books (Jane has created and written some) might see where this movie might be going and say, “you know what, I draw the line at having the Punisher based in Tampa…I can go no further into the abyss”?

Also, why would the studio force him out? He was the only good thing about the last one.

  10. “I DO want to see more Punisher”…. eh.. I'm with you if its good we'll take it for sure but there is so much more that could be done in the Marvel Universe… Punisher isnt even a top 10 current seller for Marvel….

  11. I absolutely think that could have been the case - I just don't think it was.

I think the studio saw that the last movie failed and people didn't like it and they wanted to completely reboot (much like they did with The Hulk). The studio execs being studio execs don't look at it like Jane was the best thing about the last picture (which I agree with but is still a matter of opinion). They look at it like he was a piece of the puzzle that didn't come together. So, they got rid of him and everything else and started over. That's how it works.

  12. yeah i mean, frank castle should torture people with popsicles instead of breaking the faces of the people who are responsible for killing his family and are just straight up evil, i'll take this over Ice torture any day, A straight Punisher action movie with more exploding heads in a single trailer than a descent zombie movie is on the way, and you guys are crying about Thomas Jane, the fuck is going on take it or leave it. IT looks like straight up fun.

  13. “instead of breaking the faces of the people who are responsible for killing his family and are just straight up evil”

Yeah, because the parking lot attendant that he “tortured” was both of those things.

Castle isn't soulless, he's hellbent on killing bad guys.

  14. Agreed… its not how they die or about satisfaction, its about numbers.. he's all about Next…

  15. I don't know. It looks pretty cheesy with this latest trailer. Add in the thrash metal and it's a recipe for “no thanks.”

  16. As Pariah did , I also read a number of interviews that Jane gave relative to pulling himself out due to disagreemtns and direction. I think studios to have a successful franchise like to stick with a familir face rather than keep trading to another one, I dont remember seeing much the studios wanted him out, but we dotn mostly get news on their side where actors get to voice their opinions more publicly I guess…
