“The Dark Knight” causing panic at movie theaters

The Dark Knight might just be the event of the year. I cannot remember a movie’s opening that caused this much hysteria and hype. The death of Heath Ledger, coupled with the unbelievable high praise early reviews have been giving the movie are a big reason for the increased ticket demand when the film comes out on July 18th.

In recent weeks, there have been added 1500 more showings of The Dark Knight for opening weekend. FIFTEEN HUNDRED!

I knew there would be midnight showings, but I had no idea that there were 3 AM showtimes already planned. That was surprising, but now even those times aren’t enough and movie theaters are freaking out.

IMDB reports that some theater owners have actually added a 6 AM showing to accommodate the people who cannot make the earlier screenings.

I’m not sure I’ve even heard of a movie showing at six in the morning. Unless it’s one of those kid’s summer movie bashes.

Apparently in a recent survey, 38% of Americans are planning on taking time off from work to see The Dark Knight on opening weekend.

That’s awesome. But it also awakens the very apparent reality that getting into a showing of the latest Batman sequel is going to take some patience and planning. You aren’t going to find a theater where you can walk up five minutes before the show and either find a good seat, or get a ticket at all.

You’d better get there early. Very early. Those of you looking for a midnight showing may have to think about Star Wars-like camp-outs possibly. I don’t mean days, but 4-6 hours on some of the more popular screens around town might be in order.

I can only imagine what the IMAX theaters will be like now that the word is out that you HAVE to see it on that giant digital screen.

Who is planning on seeing it opening weekend, to hell with the crowds that will be out in force?

  1. I'm seriously thinking about bucking up and just waiting until I can see it on IMAX. I know I'll have to wait longer, but…I just don't know if I want to see it any other way.

  2. Gonna be spectacular…. =)

  3. I still don't know about the IMAX part - the thought still makes me queasy. But I will definitely brave the sold-out, popcorn-filled, summer-movie-long-lines theater that weekend.

  4. Sadly, I think I'll use opening weekend to catch up on movies I haven't seen yet - Wall E and Hancock. I'll wait on Bats for a week or two. Or maybe catch an early showing mid-week after the opening weekend.

I just can't do the massive lines anymore, and there's no way TheWife would put up with it. :)

  5. I'm with RA, prob won't catch it opening weekend. More likely to catch it mid-week.

  6. I bought my IMAX tickets a week or two ago for the midnight showing where I live, and they had already sold half the tickets. The good news is that with IMAX, at least where I go (National Amusements) they have assigned seating with ushers so we don't have to worry about camping out for the good seats. :)

  7. I wonder if the AMC here has assigned seating. that would be great.

  8. [...] those movies was anything like what we’re seeing for The Dark Knight right now.  As Mike reported the other day, IMAX theaters have sold out so many of their midnight and 3:00 a.m. showings for the [...]

  9. FYI, IMAX is a gloriously old-fashioned film-based format. Everything from the cameras to the projectors use 70mm/15 perf film. Digital can't come close to touching this.
