I still prefer Paula over Jasmine. Disappointed to see her go.

Great recap. The progress of the show definately shows through your writing. Things are finally moving forward.

Two of my favorite scenes are Karl getting apprehended by the agents and the shoot out at Paula's restaurant.

I'm still very confused by Boxer 01. He is clearly a product of Alpha, and in Alpha and Beta he is totally psychopathic. But for some reason he's 'normal' in Gamma. This makes no sense, and needs to be explained since neither Charlie nor Reena have exhibited any personality changes.

I viewed this episode more along the lines of things being tied up and pieces set in place. Not sure how much we'll see of Karl, and from your synopis it looks like the end of Paula but if I hadn't read that I wouldn't be writing her off just yet. It seems she means more to Charlie than Jasmine did, but I guess that will be clarified in the weeks ahead.

“PC: It’s pretty clear early in the run that 01’s behavior is closely tied to the verse he finds himself in. Your team obviously carried that forward, as well as showing some growth to his character even in Beta and Alpha. Why does no one else seem effected by the different verses? Did you know, or was Wertheimer keeping that close to the vest?

AE: I don’t think we meant that he was magically affected by the world he was in. Gamma’s just a much saner world; and much further from Brion, his father. I think he was saner because he was happy there.”

@Tempus, Alex Epstein gave us his take on 01's behavior in our interview last week. @Dontlk has excerpted that below. But I'd go further and disagree with your statement about Charlie and Reena. I think Reena *does* act differently in Beta.

She's barraged with noise and images and horrible smells. Things don't taste as good, the air isn't clear, and the people are dangerous. She's constantly on edge and wary. It might not be as severe as 01's changes, but Reena isn't getting closer to the man who defiled *her* mother, either.

“It was a really nice touch by the sound editors playing crowd noise beneath the early part of the scene, climaxing with the sound of a tire bursting into flames.”

“By the way, this might be the best, last chance to see that third tap in the shower. So rewind and take a look.”

“But at least she’ll have money from her new job at Vexcor thanks to Rosalie’s final gift: her identity.”

Richard, thanks for catching and mentioning these little tidbits of important information that I missed. Another wonderful recap to assist me in fully understanding what went down in the episode. I have to stop watching the show so late in the evening… I’m missing too many details.

I also liked the small touch of the first match (or was it two) not lighting and subsequent frustration on Ren Porter’s face during Karl’s interrogation scene. It’s so brief and yet other (lesser) shows with a similar scenario would’ve just let the first match ignite and attempted to make it more corny dramatic by showing a close up of it lighting. Well done.

Hey there. Interesting story about this ep, esp the attempted necklacing. We scripted a more explicit version. Cultural differences, man…the South African crew and the director wouldn't do it. They wouldn't put the tire on his head and stuff — they told us “it's too loaded a symbol for South Africans.”

Anyway, so we get the rushes back and it looks like they cut to the tire and it looks kind of like Lubinsky is scared of…….a tire!

So the whole sound fx thing was an imperfect solution to communicate what we were going for when we wrote it.

A year later or so I watched the 2nd season premiere of The Shield, and they did a necklacing in the teaser — and it was brutal, and awesome and exactly how we wanted it. And I thought, “Wow. It was a good idea.”

Moral of the story: always know the mores and feelings of where you're shooting.

R.A. I've looked for an email link but couldn't find it — just wanted to say that these recaps of yours are wonderful. Really great stuff. (Found em through Alex's blog.)
