Dreamworks Planning Kung Fu Panda 2 and Madagascar 3

With Kung Fu Panda already having grossed over $560M in worldwide ticket sales, it’s a no brainer that Dreamworks would be planning a sequel. Slightly less understandable is their plans to continue the Madagascar franchise despite the fact that the second film hasn’t even been released yet.

DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg says that they are already in talks for a second Kung Fu Panda film and that they have plans to do at least one more Madagascar film (if not more).

“We’ve started conversations about it, and I think in the next 30 or 60 days, we’ll be able to talk completely about that (Kung Fu Panda),” Katzenberg told Reuters, when asked about a follow-up to a film that has raked in $560 million in global ticket sales.

Katzenberg made the statement while speaking to reporters following a screening of portions of the upcoming sequel, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.

The original Madagascar tells the story of a group of animals who escape from the New York Central Zoo. In the ensuing chaos they wind up being stranded on an island and meeting other funny animals. It grossed around $530M worldwide and was the biggest non sequel hit for Dreamworks until Kung Fu Panda surpassed it this summer.

What do you guys think? I haven’t seen Kung Fu Panda yet and I thought Madagascar was only okay. I’m not sure I care to see the sequel at all. Any of you a big fan of either of these movies?
