Earlier this week Jason posted the full trailer for the upcoming blockbuster pairing of Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe in Body of Lies. The movie looks pretty good and there absolutely no way you can go wrong with those two guys plus director Ridley Scott.
However, the most interesting aspect of the trailer for us at Pop Critics wasn’t the traffic we got from fans of Leo or Crowe.
It was the massive following that Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani has that really surprised us. From Yahoo groups, to emails, to blogs, we’ve gotten a ton of viewers who are absolutely in love with this award-winning actress.
When we started getting comments on that trailer in languages we in no way understand, I figured it was worth seeing what all the fuss was over Farahani. And there isn’t much out there about her in English, and finding a Persian to English translator proved difficult. But I was able to scrounge up some stuff about her background.
She started acting at age 6 in theater, but filmed her first movie at 14 in which she won Best Actress at the Fajr International Film Festival, Iran’s annual film festival.
That rocketed her to one of the top stars in Iranian cinema and since then she’s starred in more than 15 films, with many of them being submitted to various world film festivals. She’s won quite a few other acting awards and has been nominated for even more.
Her recent movie M For Mother was up for Best Foreign Film at the 2008 Academy Awards.
She’s fluent in French and English and plays the piano along with a number of other instruments. Farahani actually started on the piano at the young age of 5 and was accepted into the Vienna Conservatory at 14, but the Best Actress win led her to stay in Iran and further her film career.
Next up for Farahani is Body of Lies, which will be out on October 10th. Of course people will be going to see Leo and Crowe, but at least I have another reason now. She’s highly praised for her ability to take tough roles and turn them into spellbinding performances, and while her part in Lies might be small, it will be great to see what she does with it.
She definitely has a lot of fans. Can't wait to see how well she does.

i dont know why people say Golshifteh is beautiful? first of all she has a terrible harsh voice,secondly her eyebrows are thicker than polica pipes.in addition she could get this role by favourtism due to Bahman Ghobadi and also because she knows a bit of english otherwise there r lots of more capable and powerful actresses in iran.meanwhile her En accent is awful.

just wanted to add that Golshifteh Farahani comes from an artist family as well. Her dad is Behzad Farahani, one of the old, famous, powerful and well respected actors in Iran. Her sister, Shaghayegh Farahani, is also a successful actress in Iran, but not as mush as her sister Golshifteh….
the other thing i liked to add here was that there is need to a little light to shed on this subject in the eyes of western spectators…i live in the west and i know that when you see someone like Golshifteh coming from a country like iran and achiving such a great success and grabs such a attention, you compare it with a normal girl growing up in our free countries(in the west) and achieving these goals step by step and in a logical process…….but, No! we're wrong! it's not like this in Iran and similar countries… there is a lot of strict Do's and Dont's, a lot of forbidden and no no's, a lot of censor and control….a lot of fear and disappointment…and as you may know, artists are different people and very sensitive…any of these can affect their job and their motivation to carry on…. Golshifteh and other people like her, that we see from them here and there sometimes, they have come a very long and tough way….they're kind of survivors of such hard and restrict atmosphere in terms of art, we've got in Iran….their kind of champions…and thats why we respect them!

Well, there's no doubt that there are more talents like Golshifteh in Iran….like as you well mentioned Leila Hatami, but as i said earlier in that such awkward and isolated country with such huge population of young people, which to me their mostly very bright and clever, its obvious that you need a bit of chance as well to be seen by the outside world and to standing out in a crowd….as i also said, its not a normal situation in Iran, with those mullahs and stupid Islamic rules….otherwise we would have more opportunity to interact with the world in this pretty way rather than other horrible issues like nuclear or terrorism….which they have nothing to do with us as a nation but a bunch of dick head mullahs!

oh my god! Whats happening here?!!! I think you have confused 2 things: Wrong policy & limitations of iranian government, and clear, beneficial rules & instructions of Islam. i must notify that they're 2 very difrrent things. After that i must explain for those who don't know Iran's atmosphere well, that we're living in a very historical contry.in a country with a huge population of young peaple( az Nikoo said) that (almost) all are special talents and have special needs.and our government cannot satisfy all their needs because of many reasons; such az wrong economic, edjucational,… systems, conspiring of some western contries, not skilled & efficient politicians, wrong policies &…. .i think horrible issues like,nuclear , terrorism,(mr. president M.A !!!) , again az Nikoo said, have showed a terrible picture of today Iran to the others & i say we must try to correct it. for example i think Golshifteh Farahany's attendance in this film was one way to do this, and we all know every body should suport her.except some rumours,we almost know there were some threats, but we don't exactly know what they want to do at the end… .(I do'nt agree with any of these works, but) of course we should'nt judge soon. And about Islam; one of the greatest realities,az I think, The best way of life, one of the most beautifal & peaceable religions ,with essencial, efficiant rules … i cannot say any thing but just the fact that it has been introduced by the (some times) extremist behavior of iranian government(& also some theologians) & every day negative advertisements of some western medias; az a violent, horrible thing.!

I really Golshifteh !the only thing i want to add to all the above is that I really hhope Golshifteh finds her way there and continue it.cuz we have seen some of iranian artists in hollywood movies such az Shohreh Aghdashlou and…but nowadays we do not see them havin' a role!!!so i really really hope this does not happen ta my very fav actress.GOLSHIFTEH FARAHANI.

Golshifteh is a very talented actress. I like her movies a lot because she really plays w/ lots of enthusiasm and energy in her movies.
There are lots of Iranian women who don't have hejab in the U.S.
if you just take a look at Iranian people who live in CA, you'll find out that 99% of Iranian women don't have Hejab and they easily travel to Iran for vacation. The government knows about this situation but now that it's obvious that Iranian women don't care to have hijab by force. We don't want to have hejab.
People in Iran love Golshifteh w/ or w/out Hejab. It's just bunch of crazy people from the government side( only for their own benefits) who are against her.
I hope Golshifteh accepts more offers so that we see more of her plays in the Hollywood movies.
I know everybody in Iran will watch her recent movie, Bodies of Lies. I think they might have already watched it…it's Iran… if you know what I mean.
