Mike’s Pull List for the Week of August 20th

I forgot to grab my War Heroes copy this morning on my way out, so when I visited Atomic Comics this afternoon, I didn’t have the “ticket” needed to hop in the Mark Millar autograph line. Aaron, the comic book aficionado down there, tried to sell me a 2nd printing, variant version, but it just wasn’t worth it.

Besides, I was almost more interested in the model they chose to be there to enhance the event. At least, that’s what they thought. I whipped out my cell phone camera to grab a shot of Millar and company to post on the blog, but Aaron thought I was trying to steal a picture of the girl, so then I felt obligated to take one.

And the ironic part of this entire, hilarious moment, was that the good picture I got of the celebrity comic book author didn’t save to my phone, so all I have is this one (above) of the scantily clad model dressed up as some character that escapes my knowledge!

I only had two comics in my box this week, but that didn’t stop be from picking up a few others.

Y: The Last Man, Book 9

This has quickly become one of my favorite graphic novel series of all time, which isn’t really saying much in my limited time reading them. But of the 20+ trades I’ve read so far, this is up there with Civil War, The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen in terms of my enjoyment.

This is the second to the last book, I almost bought both, but figured I’d savor the end a bit. I’ve loved the entire story so far, where it’s taken us and the epic scale of it all.

1985 #4 (from box)

This has been a fun story and was one of the first comic book series I actually was able to pick up from the beginning and start fresh. It’s by Mark Millar and features a little boy who thought Marvel comics were just stories until a portal opens and evil villains from another version of Earth pile in to wreck havoc.

It’s not just about superheroes as much as it’s about this boy and his relationship with his father, which I’m really digging. The other cool aspect is the way they do a little synopsis at the start of each issue to remind you of what happened.

I’d love it if more comic book publishers or writers took the time to write a short “previously” paragraph because so often the month-long wait for the next chapter can be daunting on the memory.

Batman/Superman #51 (from box)

Umm, the cover scares me a bit, it’s supposedly about “Lil’ Leaguers” and involves some “K arc” that appears in the first 50 issues somewhere. It’s only a two-issue series, so I’m not that worried, but I’m looking forward to seeing future issues and whatever mysteries they hold.

I’m kind of bummed I missed the first 49 because it seemed like a fun arc with an ending that involved Lana and something at Lexcorp.

Voltron: Defender of the Universe #2

I’m reading this series mainly because I met the author at Comic Con and he signed the first issue for me. I liked what I’ve read so far, although other than the cartoon many moons ago, my background on the legend of Voltron is pretty limited.

Skaar: Son of Hulk #1

This is a third printing variant, but the cover was pretty awesome and Aaron recommended it, so who am I to argue with him?

The Cap’n, one of our readers here, has told me some good Hulk comics to read but I’ve never gotten the chance. This one seems to be a part of those, hence another reason why I snatched it up.

What about you guys?

That’s all for me this week, but what about you guys? If you hit up your box this week, let us know what you’re reading. I’d love to find some new stuff.

  1. Let me just say right now…. scantly clad beats Millars mug anyday :P

She looks like she is dressed up as Storm, even has the X on her belt….

  2. oh an “Skaar: Son of Hulk #1″…. this is from the Planet Hulk series ….

  3. Hey Mike, I haven't seen “The Walking Dead” on your recent pull lists. Worth a try if you like Romero based zombie stories. Go for the g novels like with “Y; The Last Man”

  4. How embarrassing for you to have to take a picture of the scantily clad model when really you wanted to take a picture of a nerdy comic book guy.

  5. It would be Emma Frost from the Xmen

  6. I know, right?

  7. Awesome, I feel smarter now.

  8. Yeah, that's what he said which is why I got it, because you told me Planet Hulk was pretty good.

  9. Ah, how many graphic novels are there so far for it?

  10. Hmm I feel less smarter now.

  11. Mike, I believe there are 7 or 8 graphic novels so far. For a few more bucks he has larger hardcovers (3 to date). He's up to issue 51 or 52 with single issues. Big transition at issue 49 so don't start with the current issue. I see the graphic novels a lot at conventions in the half price section if you're budget shopping.

  12. Yeah, I bought Hard Boiled at Comic-Con at a half-priced table…that was
    nice.

I'll look into this, thanks a lot David.
