More details on the upcoming Battlestar Galactica TV movie

We’ve got a boatload of new details emerging about the Battlestar Galactica TV movie that was given the green-light a few weeks back. We now know that Adama himself, Edward James Olmos, will be directing, and writer Jane Espenson will be penning the script.

The second bit of news regarding the movie is that we’re not going to see it until after the season finale airs in 2009.

This is both good and bad. I was hoping that this movie would come out sometime between now and January (when the season returns) just to give us something BSG-related to watch. So that kind of sucks.

However, now we know that even when the season ends, we’ve still got a little more BSG left in the tank to keep us happy. I can live with that.

Also, from the LA Times, we get the plot for this two-hour event and some casting news:

The stand-alone will document the Cylons’ attempts — those of two agents in particular — to grapple with human survivors, both those aboard ships and those left alive on planets, shortly after the Cylons’ destruction of human home worlds.

Three confirmed cast members are Michael Trucco (Sam Anders), Aaron Douglas (Galen Tyrol), and Dean Stockwell (Cavil, Cylon model No. 1) — all Cylons. Shooting will begin promptly in Vancouver, Canada, and Sci Fi promises women regulars are being cast as well, with more names coming soon.

I’m curious how they are are going to use Anders and Tyrol here because they obviously have no idea who they really are. Plus Tyol is on Galactica right? But I do love the idea of seeing Anders on Caprica right after the attacks and what transpires in the aftermath.

That LA Times article interviewed a few bloggers who are huge BSG fans, including ProgGrrl (Erica Blitz) from Galactica Sitrep and FanGrrl Magnet, who comments here from time to time:

“I’m a big fan of Edward James Olmos as a director,” said Erica Blitz, co-editor of the blog Galactica Sitrep. “All his episodes have been highly unique and really wild, especially that one from Season 3, ‘Taking a Break from All Your Worries’? That was wild!”

Mad props to Erica for making an appearance in an LA Times article!

So what do you guys think of this upcoming movie? Do you like the plot idea and where they might take it? Are you just pumped to be able to see your favorite BSG-ers back in action one more time?

  1. “we’re not going to see it until after the season finale airs in 2009….” Gah!!!

  2. Yeah, it should be good especially since they're getting cast regulars and it's not just some throw away movie trying to take advantage of the name. Sucks we have to wait, though.

  3. I hope it’s gonna be good. Sometimes movies just aren’t as good as tv shows.
