Super-scoop Michael Ausiello revealed an awesome, juicy tidbit yesterday when he spoke to Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas.
Amazingly, unbelievably, Thomas and Kristen Bell have been talking about the idea of a Veronica Mars movie down the road and I have to say, this didn’t just sound like wishful thinking. From Ausiello’s article:
“Kristen and I ran into each other, and we did discuss a Veronica movie,” confirms Thomas, who says he has also had “a few conversations” with Mars executive producer Joel Silver.
“It’s very tough to focus on it right now with two pilots on my plate,” adds Thomas, referring to his two ABC projects, a reworking of his ’90s dramedy Cupid and an adaptation of the New Zealand series Outrageous Fortune. “But as soon as I have any free time, that’s my top priority.”
Top…priority?
Wow.
I honestly didn’t think a movie would ever happen. It was a show like Journeyman, or Firefly, or Sports Night. When they were canceled, you just dealt with the pain and moved on. You really didn’t think you’d get to see it again.
Of course, Firefly ended up as a movie down the road, but the legion of Joss Whedon fans made that possibility more likely.
Are there enough fans of Veronica Mars to make the movie successful or even happen? Bell seems to get pestered all the time about it, so maybe:
Bell considers it a “major compliment” that people are still interested in Mars. “[Fans] still ask me all the time if the show’s coming back. Emotionally, I don’t want to think about Veronica Mars every day because it really does make me sad.”
It makes us sad too Kristen. But perhaps we can start thinking about it again safely, if this does indeed come true.
As great a show it was, as much as critics raved about it, Veronica Mars was on a station that didn’t give it a big viewing audience and not many people know who she is and why some of us are so passionate about stuff like this.
Heck, the X-Files had a massive following and still has only made $20 million domestically (which I was astounded to find out) on the sequel that came out this summer.
But none of that really matters to me. All I really hope is that this movie happens and we get to see what was in store for Veronica Mars. Maybe she’ll be in the FBI like the show’s creators had planned. Who knows.
Any Mars fans out there? Does this news get you all giddy inside?
[Ausiello]

The show never interested me but I did watch the third season and it was pretty good. I was a little disappointed it didn't return. My favorite episode was the one where she gets drugged. I believe it was a mid season episode.
I am all giddy… and slightly nervous. How will it translate to the big screen? I don't know if I want her to be in the FBI… where does that leave all the amazing side characters like Logan, Wallace and Mac? Whatever the end result, I would totally see it in the theatre, and how cool would it be if it attracted new fans!
