I really don’t know why this commercial just bugs the living crap out of me, but it does and I make no apologies for it.
JC Penny decided to go with this ridiculous ad campaign that tries to copy the Breakfast Club movie to a horrible cover of Don’t You Forget About Me.
The end of the ad displays the slogan “Everyday Matter.”
Here you go:
Ugh.
First off, the song is just cheesy and sickening. It’s one of those tunes that you absolutely hate, but somehow gets lodged in your brain to cause you intense pain at inopportune times.
But what about these kids? They are all just in the library goofing off for fun, not because they had to be there to serve detention on a Saturday? Where exactly does “Everyday Matters” come into play here?
It just reeks of “should not have been made” in my eyes. The awful reenactments of key scenes from the movie is so embarrassing that I had to turn my eyes away the first time I saw it.
And topper is the fist being thrust in the air at the end. Ugh, give me a break. Why, why, WHY?
Have you seen this thing on TV and wanted to scream? Am I the only one?

LOL… you guys are reviewing commercials now too on top of music, radio, books, TV, and movies!?!?! LOL…you REALLY DO COVER pop culture so I dont have to…
When I read the intro on the first page, it ends with the slogan “Everday Matter.” (sic)
I thought it was a commercial that aired in Eureka or something.
That's what we do
Ugh. Yeah, they showed it again during Middleman last night. When will the insanity end!?!
Okay. It wasn't just a memory of a dream. I *did* mention this ad in last week's MM recap.
(And now a brief moment to complain about our sponsor. They run the new JCPenney ad that’s supposed to be an homage to the Breakfast Club. Stop crapping on my youth! Okay, back to our program.)
The girl in the pink dress is supposed to be Ally Sheedy's character! What a travesty. Not to mention the skateboarder who is supposed to be Judd Nelson. At first I thought… at least they are exposing kids to the greatness that is the Breakfast Club, but this version is so Disney Channel that is doesn't even hint to that. Too bad, JCP.
I am continually amazed to see how much the younger generation is attracted to the 80's. But then every generation recycles the past and adds a new twist to it. Yeah this commercial was annoying but not anymore than the f*( D-way commercial. Face it we are all getting old. =). Well some of us are old already.
Wow, I would say that I stole it from you, but I think I missed last week's
recap because I didn't watch it until much later in the week.
Great minds and stuff.
I'm sure you didn't steal it from me. That commercial is rubbing *everyone* the wrong way.
I had been primed to hate the commercial when my friend blogged about it days before my recap.
May not be the younger generation, it's probably older ad execs who think it's cool to bring it back.
Hadn't really given it much thought until you posted this. Still love the song and the movie and all things being equal I'd prefer they not make dumb commercials based on good movies, songs, whatever. I guess this is just another example of bad marketing. Thank God for TiVo.
isnt it funny how like the girl is wearing a Nirvana shirt in bright pink with black stripes?? It's like wtf I thought Nirvana was against stuff like this. I know kurts dead and i never really liked them. but how can you buy that shirt and call yourself a fan. Back to school this year is ridiculous. You now need a digital camera, a laptop, an ipod, so on and so on. I even saw a walmart laptop commercial with a kid atleast in middle school maybe even younger getting a laptop from walmart. and it made his back to school 20000 million times better. Its like wtf is this world coming too????
LOL, didn't notice the Nirvana shirt
In The Breakfast Club, there were only two girls and three guys. In the JC Penny’s commercial, there were more kids than neccesary. The emo girl with the Nirvana t- shirt was supposed to be Ally Sheedy?! Ally Sheedy was not emo in The Breakfast Club, she looked more goth to me. No you’re not the only one who this commercial annoyed. I don’t know why it annoyed be either, but it just does.
