I’ve been meaning to tell you guys about this cool little project for awhile now, but it got put on the back-burner until last night.
The amazing model builders from Quantum Mechanix are working on a replica of that little space vessel from the Firefly TV series named Serenity. Some of their other work includes a Cylon Raider Artisan Replica for $900+ and an upcoming Basestar that flat-out looks awesome.
Also check out the sexiness that is the original Star Trek Enterprise.
So these guys who are working on this Serenity model started a blog called The Firefly Ship Works LTD., with which they’ll document their entire journey from beginning to end. You can keep up with it all by subscribing to their RSS feed.
The plan is to build the first model based off the movie version of the ship. And so far, it’s been fascinating. Here is their mission statement:
Here at the Firefly Ship Works (FFSW) our goal is to create reliable, flexible and affordable transport for you and yours, as you endeavor to reach vistas unseen and wilderness yet to be tamed. As such, we have put together this Cortex Wave Server (CWS) to keep you informed of our efforts to create the ‘Verse’s first and only screen-accurate Firefly Series 3, the Serenity Artisan Replica.
The progress has been fun. They started with sketches of what they wanted to do, and then went on to building individual pieces.
The blog post they did on comparing the TV Serenity to the movie Serenity was eye-opening. Check out the image further down and how it morphs from what you saw on TV and then in the film. They pointed out this bit about detail difference when talking about the picture:
No where is all the additional detail more noticeable than in Serenity’s main engines. We’ve put this little animation together to show how the engine design evolved from the series to the movie. Not only did the shape of the engine change, but check out the extra detailing on the sides, around the front and even on the “turkey feathers”
Late in June, the ship started taking shape and we really don’t have anything else since then. You can see the last picture below:
This model will undoubtedly cost all kinds of money and be totally unattainable, but it’s been fun watching the progress regardless. The blog is pretty cool in the fact that they post more than just Firefly stuff. They also have cool wallpapers and shots of various other ships.

[...] a special shoutout to the folks over at Pop Critic for their incredibly flattering write-up on the Firefly Ship Works. Any day we can come sandwiched between a story on a Jason and the Argonauts remake and J.J. [...]
