Not too long ago we told you that there was some heavy talk about bringing back the original Ghostbusters and having them appear in a new movie along with a new group of Ghostbusters. At the time everyone who should have been involved was saying that it wasn’t true. Now, however, we have more than one reason to believe it is.
It was only last week that Variety informed us that The Office co-executive producers and 2009-slated Year One screenwriters Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky were hired by the studio to write a script. This gets even more interesting because Harold Ramis (one of the original Ghostbusters) was the director of Year One and Judd Apatow is a producer on the film. Remember those rumors about Apatow’s bunch of merry men being brought in as the new Ghostbusters? Well, there’s your connection.
But how do we know it’s going anywhere past the draft script stage? It just so happens that Harold Ramis himself took the time to write (badly) an email to the Chicago Tribune in which he confirms many of the rumors:
“yes, columbia is developing a script for GB3 with my year one writing partners, gene stupnitsky and lee eisenberg. judd apatow is co-producing year one and has made several other films for sony, so of course the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. aykroyd, ivan reitman and i are consulting at this point, and according to dan, bill murray is willing to be involved on some level. he did record his dialogue for the new ghostbusters video game, as did danny and i, and ernie hudson. the concept is that the old ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity. not much else to say at this point.”
It’s been said for some time now that Bill Murray was part of the problem holding the whole thing up. If he has agreed to be involved in the project then I think they have a seriously killer project on their hands. I’m not certain about the idea of the originals serving as “mentors,” but I could definitely see it still being really funny. And the effects now are so much better than they were then that were sure to be in for a real treat as far as that goes.
So what do you think? Does this get you completely stoked? Or do you think they should leave the whole thing alone?

It's not like GB2 was a cinematic masterpiece, in fact it was pretty bad. GB1 still a classic, but there's no need to bring back this franchise, if you can call it that. Some movies just don't need sequels, let alone a third 20yrs later.
It's been said before on this site, that with all the amazing novels out there that would make great movies, why Hollywood continues to recycle old junk is beyond me. I still agree with that line of thinking. Let's have more Gone Baby Gone and less GB3.
Count me out on this one.
Yeah, I have to agree with Scotty about the whole, “let's make a sequel twenty years later!”
Sadly, I'll probably see it.
Scotty set tyhe tone on this one… I agree as well…can you say rental?
I agree that it's not the best idea.
However, if they get all of the original cast to appear and Judd Apatow puts his name on it and brings aboard the guys he's been working with (Steve Carell, Seth Rogan, maybe Paul Rudd or James Franco) this movie would be HUGE.
People might say that they think it's a bad idea, but like Ana, we'll all probably go see it.
Hey if they get Ray Parker Jr. to do the theme song I am there.
I kind of gave up hope on this, and was prepared to accept the videogame as the last piece of Ghostbusters saga to come. Good news!
They can't think of any new, original stories to make. They are not sure anymore if new and original stories will “show me the money”. Solution, let's start a sequel recycle revolution. So yeah, we should live with it.
Regardless, we're going to watch it.
Who do you call? GHOSTBUSTERS!!
