Dan In Real Life is the tale of a successful parenting advice columnist. This is a tale of his real life (just as the title leads you to believe).
This movie isn’t a formula comedic romance, it’s slow and sweet. The movie begins with the little mundane things it takes to keep life going. Dan is a hard worker who’s just trying to do the best he can in work and at home.
Theatrical trailers for this movie might lead you to believe this is a classic romantic comedy you’ve gotta see. This isn’t the case. While I enjoyed the slower pace, others may prefer a little more whiz-bang action for the buck. This movie is a nice and sweet story of romance at the wrong time. The comedy feels organic and is authentically embarrassing at times.
Fans of the NBC series The Office may enjoy the awkward moments and silent pauses throughout. There are even a few, genuinely painful, Michael Scott moments.
The movie soundtrack also deserves a nod. The music of Dan in Real Life by Sondre Lerche gently moves you through the tough moments and the funny stuff too, taking on a life of it’s own. I liked both the movie and it’s soundtrack.
I liked Dan in Real Life but I can’t get enough of The Office. I’m anxiously looking forward to The Office on the big screen. No, it probably won’t happen but I’m going to start that rumor on Twitter and Facebook anyway, and hey… who knows, huh?
That would be great! 2 hours of awkward silence and uncomfortable Michael moments. We can only hope!
I agree whole-heartedly with your review of “Dan in Real Life.” Although I appreciate a formulaic romantic comedy, this heartfelt tale delivered much more!
Also, while an office movie would be fun, I’m hoping there is more effort being put into an Arrested Development movie.
Not bad at all. Steve Carell is consistently good. I think I’ll give anything with him in it a chance, even if it’s written by Candace Bushnell.
Yea, Steve Carell is good, but I’m not sure about these comedies that all try to be “awkward” funny… which gets old if done incorrectly.
I also watch this movie..not bad! but these comedies plot sometimes look boring..

I heard this was terrible. But Sondre Lerche is cool. I saw him play an in-store concert a few years back and his voice is really just as good live as on record.
I liked Dan In Real Life for its true to life qualities. Although there were plenty of moments that felt genuinely sincere, there were also enough extraordinary scenes to make the film interesting. It is not 100% real life, but enough to give the impression that most characters are real. I have to agree with Blurayal about Dane Cook. I do not even think that Cook’s stand up is any good; he is just vulgar. I would not mind seeing more movies with Dane Cook being in a more serious role though. I kind of liked him in Mr. Brooks, but he was still sort of on the annoying side.
