Since I purchase way too many movies, television series, and books, I figured I should start up a series here on this site that would allow me to share with you what I’m interested in.
I’m hoping you all will share what you pick up from your weekly entertainment shopping sprees as well.
I’m a sucker for all things entertainment. Send me to Wal-Mart, Best Buy, or any bookstore, I’m like a kid that just landed in Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory — I can’t get enough. If I see a TV series on DVD that I like, it’s almost a guarantee that I’ll buy it. I’ve never walked out of a bookstore without adding at least one new book to my collection.
My brain is in need of constant entertainment.
Heroes: Season 2
If you don’t know what Heroes is, then you either don’t have a TV or have can’t tune into NBC. I feel a great sadness for anyone that’s not watching this show.
I’m still catching up on many of the series I missed last year on television. However, I did download quite a few of these episodes while in South Korea, but there were some I missed out on.
I’m actually taking a break from watching this season to write this. I just finished episode 6. So far, the season doesn’t disappoint. As soon as I’m finished writing this, I’m watching episode 7.
The Host
I admit it. I’m now a Stephanie Meyer addict. Well, I’m pretty much addicted to anything dealing with vampires. I’m on the third book in her Twilight series and am enjoying them, even if there are a few cheesy parts here and there.
She will long be known for her Twilight series, but I’ve always been more interested in reading The Host, which is a science-fiction book about invisble, alien invaders that take humans as hosts. The story follows Melanie, a human that refuses to allow Wanderer (one of the invaders) possess her mind.
The description alone promises a much better read. I’ve already bumped it up to the top of my must read list.
The Road
The Road is Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece. I don’t know how many times I thought about purchasing this book. I figured that I might as well drop the $5.97 for it. Most of my book collection is still in storage anyway, and I was starting to run out of things to read.
It is a post-apocalyptic novel about a boy and his father on a journey. Civilization has died out, along with pretty much any other species. It is an image of a future with no hope but this father and son.
There is a film adaptation of this book scheduled to be released sometime this year, starring Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee as the father and son.
The Shack
This was the third novel I picked up this week. It was also the third with the word The at the beginning of the title. That’s a bit odd.
I know we’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but every time I pass by this novel in a store, I’m instantly drawn by the image on the front cover. I finally caved and made the purchase.
The Shack was written by William Paul Young. The story promises to awaken your soul and provide some sort of answer for one of life’s ultimate questions — “Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?” (back cover).
Did you purchase anything interesting this week?
I’m always looking for new fixes for my entertainment addiction. Let me know if you’ve picked up anything good to read or watch this past week.
What about the things I purchased? Any opinions? I’m stoked that I found some great buys and have something to keep my mind occupied for at least a few days.

I would return Heroes Season 2 while you still can. It sucked, and the show mostly sucks. I am a big follower of it, I am devoted and watch it no matter what, but after the season 1, it’s mostly gone downhill. I’m hoping the “Fugitives” storyline goes somewhere good.
On another note, The Road is my second favorite book of all-time, and The Shack is good, although I’m not quite sure it will be what you expect.
“It sucked” means it’s better than 90% of all other television. I can live with dropping $25 for something like that.
Well, if you include ALL of television, being in the top 10% isn’t that hard…
There were a ton of shows better than Heroes last year and especially the year before. I’d need probably 3-4 hands to number them all.
Not saying that I’m in love with the show. I actually watch One Tree Hill instead of Heroes on Monday nights. I usually reserve Heroes for later when I have nothing better to do.
Season two of Heroes was ok, I wouldn’t put it in the top 10%though. I would return it as well, get the Wire or even The Prisoner for kitsch value and seeing it is being redone by two different productions.
Loved the Road, definitely one of my favorite fiction books.
My wife is reading the Shack and likes it as well.
My latest purchase was Fallout 3 for the PS3, making me lose sleep from playing too long at night. Other than that reading research articles which help me go to sleep.
The Wire and The Prisoner are both on my to-buy list.
I’m glad I got another vote for The Road.
I know how you feel! I love walking into a bookstore and it is very rare that I leave empty handed. Actually I have the same problem when walking into an electronics store
Luckily I’m not that much of a TV/movies freak so even though the DVD offers look appealing I can easily stay away.
Just as a side note, what is it about Heroes that people like? I’ve seen a few episodes and I think I would have to look hard to find other series with as little relevant content and substance as that show. But I guess it’s just a matter of taste and that is hard to argue about.
I can more easily walk out of an electronics store empty handed than a bookstore.
As for Heroes, I can’t speak for everyone. Mostly, I like to follow Hiro ‘s storyline. I can watch pretty much any sci-fi-type show though, no matter how bad it gets. And believe me, I have.
I cant log onto pop critics.com
Ah, Tom made me realize I forgot to answer the question
For me, recently I bought The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray and it was fantastic, and a few weeks ago my wife and I each got one of those new iPod Touches…which is amazing. Music aside, you can just do whatever you want on those things.
I tried so hard to like The Road. I started it about 8 different times last year, and I was just unable to get past the half way point. The writing, to me, is just so terrible and annoying. I’d use “pedantic” but I’m not really sure what that word means. It was frusterating because at times I felt as if I was stupid because I was the only person who didn’t like the book, but I just could NOT get into it.
The Shack was great! And The Host is in my pile, haven’t started it yet.
I won’t repeat what’s been said about Heroes Season Two except to say that if it were any other show besides Heroes, it would have been long since canceled after that.
As for me, I picked up the newest Star Trek book, “A Singular Destiny.” So far, so good.
I must say I just don’t really get what’s so special about Heroes.
Hi Justin,
I have the same problem but with stationery. Argh… Maybe I should have kept that to myself.
Like you, I can watch any old science fiction TV… Oh no the confessions keep coming, maybe I should stop now before I get on to the subject of womens underwear….argh
LOL
all the best
Season 1 of heroes absolutely rocked, season 2…..not so much
The writer’s strike definitely changed the outcome – the director says as much in the ‘behind the scenes’ footage. Whether the original plot would have lived up to season 1, we’ll never know. I’ll still buy season 3 (give it one more chance!).
Dexter has jumped to the front of the queue, these days.
I really want to read The Shack, I keep hearing about it and everyone says it is good.
As for me I have bought a lot of movies lately, since Circuit City is going out of business I am loading up for cheap.
I like Chocolate Factory. Great movie.
I’m generally a sucker for anything dark or post-apocalyptic. I know there are plenty of shows better than Jericho and Jeremiah, but the recent TV marathons of these shows have kept me very happy. My current search is for the DVD set for the 1/2 season of “Mission Hill.” That was a great show that no one saw.
Some of the items I am interested you have bought. The host is best
I really need to get The Host! I’ve read the first three Twilight books and enjoyed them, but The Host sounds excellent. I’ll read Breaking Dawn first I think, but as soon as I’ve finished with that I’ll definitely be buying The Host.
LOL..Are those movies new or old movies? Co’z I haven’t seen even just 1 movie from those list.
I tend to agree with some of the earlier posts, Heroes was brilliant in the first series – had me hooked from the first episode. Things did go downhill a bit in the second series however. I think we are a bit behind in getting the series here in the UK so looking forward to the next series.
Justin,
do you stalk my boyfriend or what?
I swear he’s just the same about buying books and films (add games, too). There’s no way we can pass a bookstore without him being magically drawn to go in and “just look”.
His last purchase was Terry Pratchett’s “Nation“.
I agree with Glenn, the first series of Heroes was great, but the second hasn´t stolen my attention for much long. I´m waiting for new stuff now.
I’m also watching Heroes and can’t wait for the new episode to come. It such a waste that Sylar just got back to the dark. He will be a great hero if given a chance but of course every Heroes needs great Villains to become one.
I’m a bit late getting on the “heroes” wagon, but started watching season one episodes a month or so ago. I’m completely addicted! I hope season 2 is just as good as these first ones.
Mmm I loved heroes season 1 and some of 2. It started going downhill majorily in season 3 and start of 4 though
(think it’s picking up again now). I think after the writers strike they must have gotten a whole new team because the other seasons haven’t come close to being as good as 1 yet.
Heard a lot of good things about the shack, currently in my amazon cart for purchase
There were a ton of shows better than Heroes last year and especially the year before. I’d need probably 3-4 hands to number them all.
Season two of Heros was not as good as the first but after watching a few episodes on tv for season three things are looking to shape up a little different.
Well – I got Terminator Salvation last Sunday with my kids. I am looking for Transformers 2 though – could not find it.
Brad Terminator 2 has not come out yet I don’t think. I’ll see if I can scratch you some INFO up on here and let you know some dates if it hasn’t already come out. Keep checking back with us daily here at Popcritics.

In this first reply I made a mistake and put Terminator 2 when it was Transformers 2 that Brad here was looking for. But I have corrected it in the second reply. I apologize for any mix up.
