Justin,
Editing now takes the user to the WP control panel. In my case I handle all registrations/logins with a 3rd party program, aMember. Members of my site never see the WP control panel. Frankly I would prefer not to take them to that page. It does not share the look and feel of my site and a lot of the information on the page is irrelevant to a post edit.
I would prefer to see an edit screen that looks like the original post screen. I am not a coder and what I am suggesting might me hard to pull off, but I think the results would keep this forum in line with the clean and simple approach for the user.

If this functionality doesn’t come along, I think you could probably use a plugin like front end editor to accomplish the task for your application.

Good to know there might be a “Plan B” for this feature. But the more I think about it, this is not just a “my application” deal. IMHO most users would expect the same UI for the initial post and a post edit.

Using something like the Front End Editor plugin is going to be the suggested solution for this for a while. Eventually, I’d like to add that feature to the plugin. But, for v.1, the focus needs to be on just making it work.
The big thing is to not try to do too much too soon. It’s best to develop in smaller releases, slowly adding new features. This way, there’s plenty of testing done for individual features. The more you do at once, the more likely you’ll have bugs.

Actually, I just tested the Front End Editor plugin and it works quite well with this. I might even install it here just to you everyone use it.
Edit: Performing a test edit. Need to make sure the topic reply count isn’t being updated on edit.

One of the great things about this plugin will be its ability to integrate with other plugins. If you want front-end editing, simply install a plugin. For users that don’t want it, then they don’t have a bunch of extra code running.

Just gave the Front End Editor a try. Pretty neat.
I suppose you would include a way to disable the edit link in the forum configuration when this plug-in is being used.

This is theme-able. It wouldn’t be something specific to the forum plugin.

OK, sounds easy enough.
I added the Front-End Editor to my site to shake it down. Pretty nice. After using it for a while, I came up with two ideas/thoughts.
NicEdit WYSIWYG Editor
The NicEdit WYSIWYG editor, that is an option for the Front-End Editor, is simple, clean and offers all the basics. I know you want to keep it simple and wrap up the first version, but if there were a relatively easy way to invoke the NicEdit editor for the initial post that would be sweet. Then by using the Front-End Editor for inline editing (with NicEdit turned on) the user would get a nice functional WYSIWYG editor for the initial post and edits.
Edit Time Expiration
Most forum software supports the setting of the time allowed to perform an edit. In most cases you would set this to 60 minutes of so. This way the initial post cannot be changed after it starts getting replies. I am going to post in the Front-End Editor forums to see if anybody has addressed adding this feature to the plug-in.
Thanks!
