“Push” is a cross between “Lost in Translation” and “Jumper”. It attempted to tread a fine line between character-driven arty piece and gripping action thriller. Unfortunately it couldn’t really find the line but that doesn’t mean I didn’t like it.

Chris Evans doesn’t suck, but I don’t really care about his character. Hounsou does what he can with the part but he’s wasted and as for Camilla Belle; if Disney needs inspiration for a Bambi remake she’d be perfect but that’s about the extent of her value.

    But Dakota Fanning?

Fanning has always mildly annoyed me by being far too old for her years. In this film she’s doing exactly that but at the same time she’s innocent, vulnerable and, well, I’m starting to think that if Dakota Fanning had been in Eragon, it would have been good, and that’s a movie even Jeremy Irons couldn’t save. She holds “Push” together and makes their attempts at a serious Children of Men type science-fiction story more credible.

The plot was a little too neat in places and in others there were massive gaping holes. The script was average but the cinematography was gorgeous. The screaming men were decidedly creepy but the Pushers, who should have been totally terrifying were simply a mild inconvenience.

And despite all that, I liked it. Not enough to spend any real money on it again but I’d watch it if it was on TV (but then, I watched Alien vs. Predator the other night just because it was on). If you like X-Men or other mutanty films then give it go, if only for best telekinetic battle EVER.
