Last week we brought you the welcomed news that Esai Morales would be joining the cast of the Battlestar Galactica spin-off prequel, Caprica. Now we have news that Eric Stoltz has signed on to join the cast for the two hour pilot as well.

Stoltz will play Daniel Graystone, a wealthy computer engineer who, after an emotionally crippling family tragedy, uses his technological wizardry to change the future of Caprica. There’s no word on whether his role will extend to the actual series or will only be in the pilot itself.

I find this bit of casting news to be fascinating. I would never have imagined Eric Stoltz as one of the cast for this show. I don’t have a problem with it, though. I think he’s a fine actor who’s really never been given enough credit or had the best roles even though he’s been in about a million different things. Maybe a role on Caprica could give his career a second life.

With this bit of news we also learned that Alessandra Torressani has joined the cast of the pilot. Torressani has had a ton of guest starring roles on TV shows ranging from Malcolm In The Middle to Arrested Development to Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. She will be playing Daniel Graystone’s daughter, Zoe.

“Jericho” fans have a little something to be happy about today. Esai Morales has joined the cast of the Sci Fi Channel’s two-hour pilot for the “Battlestar Galactica” spin-off prequel, “Caprica.” In “Caprica” Morales will play Joseph Adama, the father of William Adama (played in BSG by Edward James Olmos), who one day will take command of the Battlestar Galactica.

Joseph Adama is described as a deeply passionate man with a strong sense of justice – and someone you wouldn’t want as your enemy.

I think Esai Morales was perfectly cast in this role. Not only is it easy to see him as William Adama’s father, but he’s a good actor who should be a great anchor for the new show.

Paula Malcomson was previously cast as a surgeon who works as a double agent. Malcomson played Colleen Pickett in a couple of episodes of “Lost.” Colleen Picket was an “Other” who was shot and killed by Sun on the sailboat.

This is one of the more intriguing ideas of a television show that I’ve seen this year so far, except for perhaps Dollhouse and Fringe.

And I’ll have more Dollhouse information coming out pretty soon, just been swamped with other things.

The executive producer for Battlestar Galactica, David Eick, is working on a pilot script that will adapt the movie Children of Men for the small screen.

I can’t tell you enough how much I loved Children of Men, it was one of my top films for 2006 and probably one of my favorites of all-time.

Now the idea of it being made into a TV series is sort of worrisome, but also very interesting. Eick had this to say about it on Sci-Fi Wire.

“It’s really taking root more in the origins of the novels in that it will focus on the cultural movement in which young people become the society’s utter focus,” Eick said in an interview at SCI FI Channel’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York on March 18. “Much like our culture, whenever Lindsay Lohan does something [and] it becomes the headline of every news show, it’s about how, when you don’t have a responsibility to the next generation and you’re free to do whatever you want, where do you draw the line?”

The fact that Eick is behind it, despite his Bionic Woman blunder, gives me hope that this could turn out to be a solid, thought-provoking series.

Eick added that Children of Men will question how society defines responsibility, freedom and a sense of values when it doesn’t necessarily believe humans will survive as a species. “So it’s a very compelling, I think, human question that science fiction has always explored extremely provocatively,” he said. “It’s not really a war show like the movie was. It’s more an exploration of that issue.”

When I left the theater after seeing Men, all I could think about was how true to life it felt. If you try to picture a world where humans can no longer have children, what hope is there? Why would you work and save money?

It’s amazing when you think about it. Obviously having children is no simple thing, but it’s mind-blowing how the world would change if that happened. The human race would be completely gone in around 100 years or less, and there would be no reason to keep trying, except to find a way to get pregnancy to work again I guess.

Eick is still working on Galactica’s final season, plus starting production on the spin-off prequel, Caprica.

We’ll be watching to see if the pilot gets picked up down the road.

Apparently I should be getting TV Guide again, because I’ve seen no less than 3-4 cool stories come from their latest issue, “The Sci-Fi Preview.”

Thanks to Aint it Cool News, I found this juicy little nugget that I’ll be watching and keeping you all updated on if things progress.

According to SciFi VP Mark Stern, with the strike looking like it will never end and the lack of scripted shows set to hurt studios in the coming year, the channel is looking into the production of a full-scripted Battlestar Galactica prequel.

“I just got a call from NBC-Universal,â€? SciFi VP Mark Stern tells the magazine. “They want us to take another look at the project.â€?

It’s called Caprica and it’s supposed to be set 50 years previous to the Cylons attack on the colonies that we’ve already seen. It will deal with William Adama’s father and the human inventor of the Cylons.

Here is the official plot from Wikipedia and some other tidbits (if you consider that official):

It is described as “television’s first science fiction family saga.” The show will be set on the fictional planet Caprica, approximately fifty to seventy years before the events depicted in the re-imagined series. It will tell the story of the Twelve Colonies at peace and living in a society not unlike our own. But high technology and a startling breakthrough in robotics brings to life the age-old dream of marrying artificial intelligence with mechanical bodies to create the first living robots â€â€Â? the Cylons. They are researched and built, ultimately leading to the First Cylon War.

The series will revolve around two families: the Adamas and the Graystones. Joseph Adama, father of future Battlestar commander William Adama, is a renowned civil liberties lawyer who becomes an opponent of the artificial intelligence/Cylon experiments wrought by the Graystones, owners of a large computer corporation that builds the first Cylons. According to Mark Stern, Sci-Fi Channel’s Executive Vice President of Original Programming, the script for the two-hour pilot episode concluded with an explanation for how the name “Cylon” was coined. On September 20, 2007, Battlestar Galactica writer and producer Bradley Thompson revealed that Ron D. Moore’s script for Caprica has a character coin the term, saying, “A cybernetic life-form node, a Cylon.”

Sounds awesome. I don’t know how amazing it will be to get a single episode of a new series, but I’ll take it.
