Last night was the first episode of Saturday Night Live since the Writer’s Strike began last year and it was so refreshing to have it back. It seemed like the writers had been saving up their best stuff because I laughed out loud for a good portion of it, although that’s not really a surprise if you know me. I like to laugh.

Tina Fey was the host and Carrie Underwood the musical guest. Fey of course is my favorite and it was fantastic to see her in the host role.

Her opening monologue was interrupted by a familiar SNL face: Steve Martin. You can watch it below:

[youtube CBIO4mw9KLY]

The opening itself was pretty hilarious, with Fred Armisen playing Barack Obama, which was a big mystery leading up to the show. No one knew who was going to get the job of playing Obama and they kept it under wraps until showtime. I thought Armisen did pretty good.

The skit was a great rip on CNN and the supposed bias towards Obama and you just have to love Amy Poehler and Kristin Wiig.

[youtube XLZ18U1Txnc]

There was also a surprise guest on Weekend Update: Mike Huckabee. He was interviewed by Seth Myers and the topic was the mathematical elimination of his chances in the Republican Primaries. Great stuff!

[youtube xvSXpM5qGmg]

Tina Fey also hopped on Weekend Update to give her input on Women’s News, and here is a clip of what she has to say about Hillary Clinton and women voters.

[youtube AHONbaz-bHY]

Another pretty funny skit was a mocking of There Will Be Blood with a SUPERB impression of Daniel Day Lewis. The skit is about Drinking Milkshakes, which was a line from the film that has sort of caught fire on the web. Basically, he tells someone that he Drinks His Milkshake, sort of meaning he OWNS him. The skit is pretty good and the impression of Lewis is fantastic.

[youtube v2hCdM2d6e0]

And here is a new SNL commercial, this time about women and “periods”…oh my gosh.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdExnHM33kQ]

There was a ton of great stuff, but those are the highlights. Next week it’s Ellen Page hosting and Wilco performing. So great to have this show back!

The first episode of American Idol took place in Philadelphia and it may have given us the greatest quote ever to come from the show in six previous seasons:

“If you don’t know this hair style, then you’ve been living on some moon on the other side of an M-Class planet on Star Trek somewhere.”

Thanks Star Wars freak with the Princess Leia hair! She says staying in her home town offers nothing but the chance to be a correction’s officer. Somehow, she seems pretty cut out for it. “Duh!”

But not only did Star Wars fans probably close their eyes when they saw her, but then the guy came in wearing the Princess Leia bikini from Return of the Jedi. Not only was it beyond disgusting, but when Paula asked him to shave his chest and come back, the dude went and did it!

He returned looking like a shaved cat, but sadly didn’t change his outfit. Simon didn’t even let the guy open his mouth to sing before he ousted him from the room.

Still, perhaps the best WORST audition came from the guy with the deep voice.

“LET MY PEEPOL GOOOOOO.”

And what about the Janis Joplin sounding freak who flipped off the camera for what had to been a world record. And the guy who really scared the crap out of me who sang to Paula with the “stalker” song? Yikes…

But there were some good auditions scattered throughout the night.

Kristy Lee Cook was probably my favorite so far, but it’s mostly because I have a soft spot for country chicks. I loved Carrie Underwood of course and Kristy was great. And it sure helped that she sang Amazing Grace, a favorite of mine.

What did you think of the first episode? Good to have it back, or were you sick of it after the first hour?
