Defiance is one of those films that could potentially be up there with the likes of Schindler’s List and The Pianist in the genre of Holocaust movies.

Granted, all I’ve seen are trailers, but the buzz about Defiance is growing and the release date of December 12th just makes it all the more likely to be an Oscar contender. It stars Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell.

Here’s the plot:

“Three Jewish brothers (Craig, Schreiber and Bell) escape from Nazi-occupied Poland into the Belarussian forest, where they join Russian resistance fighters and endeavor to build a village in order to protect themselves and others in danger.”

I am a huge fan of Craig and Schreiber, but you also get Edward Zwick, the director of Glory, Blood Diamond, Legends of the Fall and The Last Samurai.

Watch the trailer below and I dare you to not get goosebumps from it, and then check out the new poster for the film below.

According to the UK's Telegraph, James Bond star Daniel Craig yesterday cut off part of his finger on the set of Quantum Of Solace, the latest Bond flick which some are calling "cursed."

According to the UK’s Telegraph, James Bond star Daniel Craig yesterday cut off part of his finger on the set of Quantum Of Solace, the latest Bond flick which some are calling “cursed.”

Daniel Craig was filming a scene at Pinewood Studios, when he cut off the tip of one finger in an action sequence. Mr. Craig was rushed to the hospital, treated, and released. He went back to the set and continued to work in the afternoon.

A member of the production team said: “There was quite a lot of blood and it was decided he needed to go to hospital for emergency treatment.

The finger incident is just the latest in a long line of freak accidents that have left many wondering if the set or the movie itself is “jinxed” or “cursed.”

Some of the previous incidents that have occurred:

In March, Daniel Craig, was taken to Punta Pacifica hospital in Panama for a check up after bruising his ribs.

In early April, production was briefly interrupted when Carlos Lopez, the mayor of Sierra Gorda in Chile, drove onto the set to complain the filmmakers had not asked his permission to film.

A Bolivian minister, Pablo Groux, filed a formal complaint against the film in a court in Bolivia, complaining that the film stigmatises Bolivians as drug dealers. He added that he was offended the producers had chosen to film scenes representing Bolivia in Chile, its historic enemy.

A week ago, a collision left a gash on the Craig’s face that required eight stitches

Just last weekend a fire broke out on the set which severely damaged an outdoor Bond set at the studio.

In April, two stunt drivers were injured in two crashes during filming on location in Lake Garda in northern Italy.

A third car accident saw an Aston Martin catapulted into the lake after skidding on a wet road.

Pinewood Studios itself, where Bond is filming, only reopened a year ago after an earlier fire destroyed a giant replica of Venice during filming of the last 007 film, Casino Royale.

The film may not be cursed, but it is definitely having its share of bad luck which has left cast and crew feeling a bit on edge. I can’t say I blame them. Let’s just hope the film is worth all the trouble.

Quantum Of Solace is set to hit theaters on November 7, 2008.

Daniel Craig really got me back into the James Bond franchise with Casino Royale and when word hit that a sequel was coming soon, I started looking forward to it.

Then the title was released and people scratched their heads and hmm-ed and wondered what the heck it meant. Well, we still don’t know exactly, but The Movie Blog uncovered this definition from Ask Yahoo:

“Quantum of Solace is a small degree of comfort that can exist between two people emotionally in a relationship. The Governor character in the Ian Fleming short story of the same name defines it as “… a precise figure defining the comfort, humanity and fellow feeling required between two people for love to survive. If the quantum of solace is nil, then love is dead.

Sounds interesting, albeit very confusing and really casting no more light on what to expect.

The official plot though was sent out via Press Release on Friday and perhaps using the explanation above and the outline below, you can figure out what it might mean.

“‘Quantum of Solace’ continues the high octane adventures of James Bond (Daniel Craig) in ‘Casino Royale.’ Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal.

Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M (Judi Dench) interrogate Mr. White (Jesper Christensen), who reveals the organization which blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined. Forensic intelligence links an MI6 traitor to a bank account in Haiti where a case of mistaken identity introduces Bond to the beautiful but feisty Camille (Olga Kurylenko), a woman who has her own vendetta.

Camille leads Bond straight to Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a ruthless business man and major force within the mysterious organization. On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the world’s most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano (Joaquin Cosio). Using his associates in the organization, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land.

In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel Greene’s sinister plan and stop his organization.

I’m actually trying to avoid reading too much of the plot because I don’t like to have potentially great films ruined because I know everything going in, but I post it here for those of you who like to have every bit of information possible.

The new James Bond film that is set for a November 22nd, 2008 release date has finally been given a name.

Quantum of Solace.

Hmm.

Doesn’t really roll off the tongue, and it really doesn’t seem like a very Bond-like name. For some reason I’m picturing James Spader and Laurence Fishburne in a science fiction movie about another dimension.

But that’s the name and you may be wondering where the heck they got it. Well, Bond author Ian Fleming wrote a bunch of short stories on the same character and there was one by this very name.

According to TheWest.com, this work of fiction was unlike Fleming’s other stories, because it lacked a real plot and even spies. It had to do more with the inner state of Bond’s mind. Which could be where this next film is going.

If you would rather not know the plot outline of this film, stop reading now.

Producer Michael G. Wilson had this to say:

“It’s from a Fleming short story from the compendium For Your Eyes Only. It’s uncharacteristic of most of Fleming’s work,” he said.

“It’s a character study that doesn’t involve plots or anything with spies. We thought it was an intriguing title that references what’s happening to Bond and what’s happening to him in this film,” Wilson hinted.

They want on to say that the film deals with Bond’s inner turmoil and has MUCH more action than Casino Royale.

EmpireOnline.com has uncovered a bit of what the story will be for the film:

We have learned that the plot centres on an attempted coup in a South American country. Dominic Greene^ (Mathieu Amalric), who works behind the cover of an organisation called Green Planet, wants to control one of the world’s most important natural resources* and to aid in this he makes a deal with an exiled South American general to get him back into power.

Olga Kurylenko’s character, Camille, is half Ukrainian and half South American. She leads Bond to Greene in his effort to find out more about Vesper, the woman he loved and lost in Casino Royale.

“James Bond is after revenge, and Camille is after revenge,” Kurylenko said. “They have slightly different goals, but in the end they are going to have to collaborate”.

I like the idea for the plot and perhaps the name of the movie will grow on me. I will say that Casino Royale is probably my favorite James Bond movie to date, so that gives me a lot of hope for this one.

And it will be nice to see Craig in something good after The Invasion and The Golden Compass.
