The executive producer for Battlestar Galactica, David Eick, is working on a pilot script that will adapt the movie Children of Men for the small screen.

I can’t tell you enough how much I loved Children of Men, it was one of my top films for 2006 and probably one of my favorites of all-time.

Now the idea of it being made into a TV series is sort of worrisome, but also very interesting. Eick had this to say about it on Sci-Fi Wire.

“It’s really taking root more in the origins of the novels in that it will focus on the cultural movement in which young people become the society’s utter focus,” Eick said in an interview at SCI FI Channel’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York on March 18. “Much like our culture, whenever Lindsay Lohan does something [and] it becomes the headline of every news show, it’s about how, when you don’t have a responsibility to the next generation and you’re free to do whatever you want, where do you draw the line?”

The fact that Eick is behind it, despite his Bionic Woman blunder, gives me hope that this could turn out to be a solid, thought-provoking series.

Eick added that Children of Men will question how society defines responsibility, freedom and a sense of values when it doesn’t necessarily believe humans will survive as a species. “So it’s a very compelling, I think, human question that science fiction has always explored extremely provocatively,” he said. “It’s not really a war show like the movie was. It’s more an exploration of that issue.”

When I left the theater after seeing Men, all I could think about was how true to life it felt. If you try to picture a world where humans can no longer have children, what hope is there? Why would you work and save money?

It’s amazing when you think about it. Obviously having children is no simple thing, but it’s mind-blowing how the world would change if that happened. The human race would be completely gone in around 100 years or less, and there would be no reason to keep trying, except to find a way to get pregnancy to work again I guess.

Eick is still working on Galactica’s final season, plus starting production on the spin-off prequel, Caprica.

We’ll be watching to see if the pilot gets picked up down the road.
