Just in case you were afraid there would be a movie franchise that they would somehow leave alone…let me reassure you that there isn’t. Paramount has given the green light to a fourth installment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise starring Eddie Murphy in the role that helped make him famous.

According to reports, Murphy is the one who approached the studio about bringing back the character of Axel Foley, no doubt emboldened by the return of characters such as Rambo, Rocky, John McClane, and Indiana Jones.

The current goal is to get the film in production by 2009 with sights set on a summer 2010 release. Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon, X-Men: The Last Stand) is in negotiations to direct.

The first Beverly Hills Cop was released in 1984 and grossed $316 million worldwide (close to $650M in today’s dollars). That film spawned two sequels, the last of which was released in 1994. All together, the three films grossed $712.9 million worldwide.

If this film is released in 2010, it will have been 16 years since the previous film in the franchise. That would be comparable to the 16 years between Rocky movies, 19 years for Indy, 12 years for John McClane, and 20 years for Rambo.

Still, one must ask the question, is there really an audience for this type of movie in this day and age? The last film in the franchise didn’t do nearly as well as the first two did and Eddie Murphy isn’t exactly known for his cutting edge action films these days.

Would you go see a fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie?

Hot on the heels of the Meet Dave poster we get the Meet Dave movie trailer. Like I implied before, Eddie Murphy movies these days are pretty hit or miss. Now, I’m not one of those movie snobs that think all movies have to be on some sort of grand intellectual level to be enjoyable so I like some of Murphy’s movies that other internet movie snobs look down on. But I’m still undecided on this film. I think the concept is decent and could be played for some good laughs. The trailer is pretty decent. I’m just slightly afraid they’re going to go way over the top again and/or play to children (a type of comedy I’m not really a fan of).
In Meet Dave, Dave Ming Chang (Eddie Murphy), newly arrived in New York City, may be the ultimate fish out of water. There’s something about him that’s not quite right – for starters, he seems remarkably out of place and uncomfortable in his own body. And for good reason: “Dave is not a man at all, but a ship made in the image of its miniature-sized captain. It’s Eddie Murphy in Eddie Murphy in Meet Dave.

Basically, you have a captain of a ship (Eddie Murphy) that looks like a ship (that looks like Eddie Murphy) that somehow learns to think on its own and develops feelings for a woman (according to what I’ve read elsewhere) thereby endangering the mission and the ship’s crew. Yeah, I still don’t know what to think.

Meet Dave stars Eddie Murphy, Eddie Murphy, Gabrielle Union, Elizabeth Banks, Mike O’Malley, Shawn Christian, Judah Friedlander (30 Rock), Ed Helms (The Office). It’ll be hitting theaters on July 11, 2008.

What do you think? Is this an Eddie Murphy that you might catch this summer?

Eddie Murphy movies often confuse me. They don’t confuse me so much with their complicated plot devices, but more with the question of why Eddie Murphy decided to make the movie in the first place. Don’t get me wrong, Murphy has a lot of good movies. Well, some good movies. Then he has all the others.

This looks like it might be one of the others.

Meet Dave is about a crew of miniature aliens who operate a spaceship that has a human form (Murphy, I’m guessing). While trying to save their planet, the aliens encounter a new problem, as their ship becomes smitten with an Earth woman.

Weird. The IMDB synopis actually makes me feel better about the movie somehow. Maybe it won’t be that bad after all.

I’ll never learn, will I?

Meet Dave opens in theaters on July 11, 2008.

Variety is reporting the sad news that the release of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek (official site) has been pushed back to 2009. Originally scheduled for release on December 25, 2008, Star Trek will now bow on May 8, 2009.

Star Trek fans everywhere moan.

Paramount has their reasons, of course. They apparently believe in the film so much they want to use it as a summer tentpole film and release it during the summer movie season where the blockbuster potential is larger.

Star Trek has no competition in its new slot – at least not yet, although it opens one week after 20th Century Fox opens X-Men Origins: Wolverine and one week before Sony is slated to bow the expected hit sequel Angels and Demons.

The Star Trek change was not the only shuffle Paramount made to its schedule and to the schedule of Dreamworks. Some of the other changes they made include:

The Ben Stiller summer comedy Tropic Thunder is moving from July 11 to Aug. 15

Martin Scorsese’s Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle Shutter Island…er…Ashecliffe will be released Oct. 2, 2009.

An untitled comedy produced by Marlon and Shawn Wayans will be released on Feb. 9, 2009.

The Eddie Murphy family film Nowhereland is moving from Sept. 26, 2008, to June 12, 2009.

Renee Zellweger’s horror-thriller Case 39 is moving from Aug. 22, 2008, to April 10, 2009.

David Fincher’s Brad Pitt starrer The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is moving from Nov. 26, 2008, to Dec. 19, 2008.

Still, it is the Star Trek news that is the most disappointing. It’s not that the studio doesn’t have a valid point and it’s not that it isn’t a smart business move. It just sucks that we have to wait another five months to see a movie we’ve already so excited about.

In case you’re doing the math in your head, we saw the teaser in January which means we saw the first trailer for Star Trek a full one year and four months before the film is set to open. That’s insane.
