Mel Gibson has finally found a movie he wants to star in. Gibson hasn’t starred in a movie since 2002 when he had the back to back hits of Signs and We Were Soldiers. He took off the intervening years to direct 2004′s The Passion of the Christ and 2006′s Apocalypto (and possibly to lay low after a drunken run-in with police led to some Jew-bashing).

The 52-year-old Gibson has now committed, however, to starring in a film called Edge Of Darkness which is based on a BBC mini-series. Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, GoldenEye) will direct the feature adaptation of the six-hour 1985 BBC miniseries, which Campbell also directed.

The film will take place in Boston and Gibson will play a straitlaced police investigator whose activist daughter is killed. He plunges into the case only to uncover systemic corruption that led to his daughter’s death.

Daily Variety notes that Gibson had long been a fan of the miniseries, and was receptive when producer Graham King and director Martin Campbell approached him several months ago. Shooting on the project begins in Boston in August. William Monahan wrote the script, and Graham King is producing through his GK Films. Michael Wearing, who produced the original, will also produce, and the BBC will be involved in a producing capacity.

I’m glad to see Gibson finally getting back to acting. I’ve always been a fan of his and it’s been a long time since we’ve seen him in anything. I’m also a fan of director Martin Campbell who I think made two of the best James Bond movies of all. I’m looking forward to seeing what they can put together on this one.
