When does the madness stop? Are you kidding me? A 21 Jump Street big screen adaptation?

I know it will never, ever stop, but it doesn’t stop me from wishing people would stop reaching back for old TV shows to make into movies. Like the upcoming A-Team.

It’s also shocking to me that a guy like Jonah Hill would be attached to this, not only as a writer but also as the executive producer. With his history of comedies and working with Judd Apatow, I’m surprised he’s not trying something more original. Or even original.

From Coming Soon:

Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Jonah Hill (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Superbad) will write the screenplay for and executive produce Sony’s adaptation of “21 Jump Street,” the popular ’80s show starring Johnny Depp.

The magazine says that it hasn’t been decided whether Hill will star in the movie.

I never watched the series really, mostly because I was 12 at the time and Fox was so new and raunchy it seemed, my parents kept me as far away as possible. Of course, all I heard was them howling with laughter at Married with Children.

Are you guys with me on this? Or would you love to see 21 Jump Street at your local theater?

Also, while you are here, you can tell me if this idea sounds even worse.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is just another in the long line of comedies being done by Judd Apatow and his production company, Apatow Productions (for being such a great comedy writer, you’d think a more original name could have been come up with).

Let’s run down the list of Apatow television/movies in the past 8 years: Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, Anchorman, 40 Year Old Virgin, Talladega Nights, Knocked Up, Superbad and Walk Hard. You also have Drillbit Taylor coming in 2008 and now this new one, Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

That is a seriously awesome list of films.

Besides Apatow, Forgetting Sarah Marshall has two things going for it (for me at least): Kristen Bell and Jason Segal. First off, Kristen Bell is awesome, and while she didn’t shine in Heroes (I blame the writing), her three years on Veronica Mars were superb.

And Jason Segal is from Freaks and Geeks and was also in Undeclared and Knocked Up. You also get another dose of Jonah Hill from Superbad.

At some point, you may ask yourself, “doesn’t it seem lame and tiring to do all these movies with essentially the same revolving group of actors?”

That’s a great question, but I’m not ready to answer “yes” yet. I still love all these guys. And now he adds Kristen Bell into the mix.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the tale of a guy who gets dumped by his girlfriend and travels to Hawaii to get over it. Little does he know, she’s there too and with her new boyfriend.

Sounds like a fun little plot and the previews below look pretty much like an Apatow film. It’s supposed to be released on May 30th, 2008.
