New "Captain America" details, plus the "Iron Man" shield connection

We’ve got some good Captain America stuff for you today, although the bit about his shield was something I meant to post last week or the week before.

Slipped my mind as usual with the unfounded amount of information I go through on a daily basis. (Of course, if anyone is looking to help, we could use it!)

SciFi posted some comments Kevin Fiege (president of Marvel studios) made on the 21st to some online journalists.

It’s going to be set during World War II, exactly like the comic books and Fiege pretty much killed the sick rumors that Matthew “look at my chest” McConaughey would play Captain America.

The Captain America movie will set up the Avengers film that will release 6-weeks later.

And also…he talked about the biggest easter egg from Iron Man, where someone spotted what he thought was Captain America’s shield on Tony Stark’s workbench.

Turns out, that WAS correct. Here are the pictures below. The first is the scene from the theatrical trailer which had nothing in it.

Here is the second screen capture, which was from the movie. It shows an added “element” that obviously came after the trailer was made, so it stood out to someone as an easter egg.

A pretty sweet little addition to the Iron Man story to know he was working on some sort of fancy shield that Captain America will end up using.

Gotta love the way Marvel is handling their universe of superheroes.

Feige also confirmed release dates for Marvel’s future slate of superhero movies: Iron Man 2 on April 30, 2010; Thor on June 4, 2010; The First Avenger: Captain America on May 6, 2011; and The Avengers on July 1, 2011.

Could Matthew McConaughey Be Captain America?

After Marvel’s big announcement yesterday of their upcoming slate of movies over the next, oh, millenium or so, it’s no big surprise that talk has already started about who could possibly play one of the most coveted roles in their upcoming pics – that of Captain America.

Well, Cinema Blend this morning says the rumor is that Matthew McConaughey is on the short list of actors the studio is most interested in. As Cinema Blend points out, however, McConaughey might possess the looks of a beefcake American hero, but he’s hardly the archetype for which Captain America stands.

Needless to say, no contracts have been signed or official talks begun. The movies were only announced yesterday so it’s likely we could have a pretty long wait before finding out who the studio is actually interested in. Somehow I doubt McConaughey will end up being the actor they go with.

"Tropic Thunder" Full Trailer with Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey, Jr.

Just a week after getting our first teaser for Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder we get a full trailer that gives us a pretty good look at Robert Downey, Jr. in full black man make-up. I have to say, it’s hard to tell it’s Robert Downey, Jr. Jack Black looks to be doing his thing as well.

The full trailer actually looks really funny. Sadly, Ben Stiller is probably the least funniest actor in the trailer. I’m sure he’ll do his Ben Stiller thing and that’ll be good if you’re in to that. I’m actually hoping he’ll stretch a bit and try to do something different for a change. It doesn’t really look like it, though.

Tropic Thunder is about a group of spoiled actors who think they’re filming a movie about the Vietnam war must fight for actual survival when their fed-up director and writer decide to dump them in the middle of a real war.

The film stars Ben Stiller’s, Robert Downey, Jr., Jack Black, Nick Nolte, Jay Baruchel, and Brandon T. Jackson and features cameos by Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaughey, and Tobey Maguire.

Tropic Thunder is set to open on August 15, 2008.

In Ben Stiller’s first directed film since Zoolander, Stiller stars alongside Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. as a group of spoiled actors in Tropic Thunder. Through a series of freak occurrences, this group of actors, while shooting a big-budget war movie, are forced to actually become the soldiers they are portraying.

Most of the press for this film so far has come from the fact that Owen Wilson had to drop out of his cameo in it due to his suicide attempt last year and the fact that Robert Downey, Jr. is playing an actor who is so committed to his work that he decides to play a character originally written as a black man…as a black man…by dying his skin and using makeup to make himself appear to be black.

It seems that a lot of the media is trying to make a big deal out of the whole white person playing a black person thing, but I really don’t see the problem. We obviously can’t judge the context of the part without seeing the film and those people who have seen a rough cut of the film (including black people) have had nothing but good things to say about it. I think it’ll turn out to be a non-issue.

At any rate, the film doesn’t open until late summer, but the studio went ahead and released an early teaser trailer for the film. It doesn’t tell much so don’t get too excited.
