The second week of American Idol 2008 live performances is now complete. On Thursday night, the second group of four people, two men and two women, were cut from show, this time from the top 20 contestants. If you missed the performances you might want to check out our recaps of the shows:

American Idol 2008 – Top 10 Men Performances

American Idol 2008 – Top 10 Women Performances

After our reading our recaps and hearing what we had to say about the performances I hope you were as shocked as we were by the results. Although there’s always a chance with American Idol that it will go differently than you expect, this week’s results didn’t seem to make a lot of sense. The four we thought were the most likely to get voted off were:

Luke Menard

Jason Yeager

Amanda Overmyer

Kady Malloy

Concerning the men, I also said that, “Robbie could certainly take the place of one of them if the rocker votes are split enough.” I also had Alexandrea Lushington in my bottom three, but said that, “If there is an upset…I can almost guarantee the other person will be Alaina Whitaker.”

Well, I was right and wrong at the same time. The four contestants who actually got booted from the show were:

Jason Yeager

Robbie Carrico

Alexandrea Lushington

Alaina Whitaker

I was correct about Jason, but I really thought Luke would get the boot over Robbie. I was correct, however, in saying that Robbie could easily take the place of one of them if the rocker vote was split enough. It would appear as though that is precisely what happened.

As for the women, I simply rolled the dice and lost. The two women I chose and the two who were booted were all named as my bottom contestants. I ended up going with the two who survived. Once again, I was completely correct in saying that if there were an upset that Alaina Whitaker would definitely be going home.

Even though I had Alexandrea Lushington in my bottom three for the week I really thought she’d be given another chance. I guess that just goes to show you that on American Idol you have to bring it each and every week because you never know when you’ll get another chance.

The true travesty here is that Amanda Overmyer gets to remain in the competition despite a horrid performance simply because her style is so different from the others. Come on people, different doesn’t mean better! It just means different.

If you’re keeping score with the little side contest Jeff (from Static ThinkBox) and I have going… Jeff is now 5-3 by his count. I am 4-4 by his count. Although, I feel I should be given credit for both Robbie and Alaina since I did correctly call them…

For a quick recap from a slightly different perspective, swing by American Idol: Season 7 Cuts to 16 Finalist and see what Jeff has to say about the ousted contestants.
