Just as I noted a few days ago after seeing a promo for it on Universal HD, my DVR today picked up Episode “33″, which is the official first episode of Battlestar Galactica: Season 1.

The funny thing is that Universal HD’s own website doesn’t show this on their schedule, but my DTV guide has it there twice on Saturday night, and I’ve been hearing from other sites that it’s showing up on their guides as well.

The downside of this is that as far as I can tell, they aren’t showing the mini-series before Episode “33″, meaning if you’ve never seen the show, you’ll miss out on how it all begins. You can easily go rent it from your local video store though I assume.

I am trying to make contact with NBC programming to find out more of their plans for showing this entire season on UHD and will let you know what I discover.

I may have said it before, but Universal HD is one of my favorite stations out there. That’s where I caught up with Battlestar Galactica in the beginning and where I got to watch Firefly all over again in high-definition.

Well, this week the fun continues. Two series, Jericho and Friday Night Lights, make their debuts on Universal HD this Friday night, January 4th.

If you haven’t seen the first season of Jericho, this is a good time to catch up without having to buy the DVDs. You should be aware though that Jericho returns with their short second season on February 12th, so it might be hard to get all caught up with season one first.

The first year had 22 episodes, so if they stick to their normal once a week showing, that makes it around May 30th for the final one to air. That’s a long way from February 12th.

However, if you just Tivo them all instead, there are only seven episodes of the new season two and that should fit on your DVR just waiting until you get done on May 30th.

As far as Friday Night Lights, the first season was one of the best I’ve seen of any show in a long time. It’s worth getting sucked into, especially during this WGA strike.

Give them both a shot if you are bored, and if you don’t get UHD at all, it might be time to switch to Direct TV.

Jericho starts at 6pm EST, with Friday Night Lights at 7pm EST. Both repeat later that night.

All of you on-the-fencers who wish you were watching Battlestar Galactica, but want to start from the beginning are finally in luck!

Of course, you do need a high-definition television and a cable/satellite provider that has Universal HD as an available channel. But honestly, if you don’t, you may as well just rent the DVDs since anything widescreen is better than 4:3 ratio.

UHD ran a promo this week announcing that Battlestar Galactica could be seen from the beginning starting in January of 2008, which is exactly what I have been looking for. I had been thinking of just purchasing the HD-DVD set of Season 1, but now I’ll just Tivo the UHD episodes instead and save me some bucks.

I’ll keep you guys updated on this and the schedule as the time nears.

UPDATE: First episode is January 5th. Read more on my newer blog post.

If they do it right, the season starts off with a 2-hour miniseries which gets the whole show off the ground. You see the entire Cylon war begin, who is at fault and what state the human race is in right after. It’s deliciously fun.

I just want to re-iterate one more time. This show is one of the best things on TV, a drama as good as Lost, or the Sopranos or any of the top series out there.

Give it a chance…watch the first 5 episodes and if you don’t like it, I’ll find it hard to believe.
